Artist's Statement
My artistic path has meandered through a variety of media (words,
paint, metal, collage) with the common threads of texture and detail.
For thirty years I worked in metals, first jewelry then wall sculpture.
Gradually my pieces became more and more like textile art as I used
thin copper as an unwieldy fabric. Eventually I turned to a combination
of materials, always seeking expression through the texture gained
from assembling many parts, layering, painting, and drawing. Whether
my work is assembled with tacks or sewn with wire, I seek to emulate
the honest work of basic life tasks.
Bio
Judys first art was writing but a search for hands-on creativity
while teaching English, led her to the jewelry and metal smithing
department at the University of Maryland. Through the years she
has supplemented her artistic education with graduate work in metals,
painting, and art history as well as numerous workshops.
